From 1939 to 1943, 185 refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe found a safe haven at Scattergood, a temporary hostel in what had been an abandoned Quaker boarding school on the Iowa prairie. Jews, Hitler opponents and others built a new life in the New World with the help of Iowa Quaker farmers and college students.
